October Paris Exhibition Opening

At Memoire de l'Avenir, in collaboration with UNESCO MOST:

On https://www.ocirp.fr/prix-ocirp-handicap/actualites-du-prix/regards-dartistes-sur-notre-societe-22 one can access the media about me that was publicised after my Paris exhibitions (screenshot below):

Reflection time

Every so often, I stop to reflect on what people say during and after my presentations... so that I can adapt my intervention to best suit my audience.

Parents are particularly touched to meet with me - some say they do not know any adult that has the same condition as their child and they fear the uncertainty of the future:
"Yaniv's presentation was inspirational to our school with many parents able to reconnect with hope for a significant future for their children"
Teachers think about their relationship with parents:
"The message is multi-dimensional: It is about following one's passion and becoming very good at it! Sure, it outlined the role of creativity to bring out talent from our disabled students, but parents then started to reflect on what their children really liked that could be developed into a career - some artists, computer scientists, animal carers, kindergarten teachers"
A school Principal notes:
"Parents and students can re-connect to a future with meaning through Yaniv's story. Teachers went away and tried the "key hole" methodology developed by Dr. Janson to focus on children's strengths - not deficits - and build on what they loved doing"
Next, I want to focus on organisations that support people with disabilities - after they leave school.

Meeting Hon Nicky Wagner in Wellington

I was wrapped to be invited to meet the Hon. Nicky Wagner, Minister for Disability and Associate Minister for Conservation. I feel that if my story can touch her heart, then it will make a wide impact as her actions reach all corners of the country.

Hon. Nicky Wagner loves the book that tells the story of why following my passion helped me create my own career. She tells me what she likes about some of the paintings of the book.

Hon. Wagner tells me each story behind the art in her office and it is so exciting to hear why she loves each piece of art.

Check out the view from her office in Bowen House!!!!

There are 2 priorities in the Government's Disability Action Plan (2014-2018) that I'd be very keen to be involved in as part of a Taking Action [UNESCO] project:
  • Priority 3: Increase the number of disabled people, including long-term unemployed disabled people, in paid employment and self-employment on an equal basis with others
  • Priority 4: Increase the number of employers who are confident in employing disabled people, with the public sector taking a lead
I'd love to contribute - for instance meeting with employers and explaining how disabled people are eager to engage in the workplace and how the research shows that there are many advantages to employing disabled people. See for instance a video clip filmed by Annick Janson about a Te Awamutu employer who explains what a win-win it can be with the right supports in place.

Update: Hon. Nicky Wagner also posted about my visit!

Since she is also Associate Minister for Conservation, I am stoked that she is touched by the themes of the book... her favourite painting is Ice Cap Melting in the book.

Meeting Peter Gibson from Arohanui in Tauranga

My 12th visit was with Peter Gibson who manages an organisation called Arohanui which is a Community centre where many people do different activities.

I personally tested the sensory room - its lights were very nice and music and bouncy balls!

Meeting Richard Coad from SwitchedOn in Tauranga

The meeting in the Tauranga cafe was very nice. Richard shared his story with me and also told me what excites him about his work in the disability sector. He will use the book to train staff too.

Hi Yaniv,
It was good meeting you and Annick the other day. Thank you for the book. I thought I would let you know that my team are queuing up to look through it and talking about how it can be used as a resource.
They love it and want to use it.
Cheers

Meeting with Tony McLean from ImagineBetter in Tauranga

ImagineBetter help support many disabled people to start their microbusiness. I enjoyed meeting Tony again - I met him last year when Annick and I travelled to Tauranga to help him facilitate a workshop on micro business.

He was super nice

He even invited us to his house for dinner 1 night
Next year he wants to invite me so that other people can learn from my experience

Eleos Trust and Comvita: Thank you so much for your support!

Huge appreciation to the Eleos Home Trust, the Utting family and the Comvita team for their amazing support!!!

The Eleos Trustees attended my Bay of Plenty Beehive Hidden in Trees exhibition and it was a great opportunity to catch up. The Eleos Trust has provided amazing support to this project. They believed in our vision from the start.

This photo was taken during the VIP event that Comvita organised for the exhibition opening, and a short clip below shows highlights from the night:

Yaniv filmed at Experience Comvita - just before the Attitude Awards finals! Our deepest thanks to the Comvita team who supported us throughout the In Bee Tween project - raising awareness about the environmental issues that surround bee keeping and honey production.
